Have you heard the news? We are the proud owners of three hens! They are about 8.5 weeks old, and are the Red Star (aka red sexlink) breed.
Pictured below, from left to right: Shirley, Mrs. Babish (in the back), and Laverne. Each of them have such fun personalities and are quite different from each other!
They are quite curious and like being outside in their run when are with them. Since we brought them home, we’ve been spending a few hours throughout the day sitting in the outdoor run so that they can get used to being outside. We think they are still a bit nervous to be out on their own.
Mrs. Babish noticed my engagement ring and now she, and the others, like to peck at it. I’m not sure why, but it is funny!
Shirley is the most reserved hen, and she doesn’t like to be outside by herself. She prefers eating berries over bugs, likes dipping her feet in the water dish, and does not like being pet or picked up but she doesn’t make too much of a fuss. Her wings have some light brownish-red feathers at the tops which is how we distinguished her from Laverne. Despite being the shy one, Shirley was the first to eat out of our hands.
Mrs. Babish is the mothering type who is the boss but in a subtle way. She is the leader and usually goes outside first while the others follow. Laverne and Shirley often puff up at each other and squawk but never to Mrs. Babish! She is very alert and gets frightened by loud noises, which sends her running inside and the others follow close behind. She does not like being held and will make quite a loud noise when she is pet.
Laverne is brave and has a very keen eye. She likes eating grasshoppers and other bugs, and is very quick to catch them. She is often seen walking around the run peering into the yard to see what’s going on outside the fence. Of all three hens, Laverne seems to tolerate being pet and held the best. She does make a little peep when she is pet but as long as she can see you reaching for her, she is okay with it. We’ve noticed that she will actually walk towards us and brush against our legs, so we will pet her. Laverne is quite similar physically to Shirley, but her wings are more white.
Having chickens is so much fun! We’ve only had them for a few weeks but are enjoying how funny they are. They all get along well, which is not surprising since they came from the same large group of day olds. These three like to sleep together, eat together, and socialize with us together. I hope you enjoyed “meeting” them and will be on the lookout for more pictures in the future!
